The 2009–10 season was the 88th season in York City F.C.'s history, their sixth in the Football Conference and 82nd in the league system of English football. Their 17th place finish in the 2008–09 season meant it was their sixth successive season in the Conference National. It was also Martin Foyle's first start to a season as manager, after he was appointed following the sacking of Colin Walker in November 2008. It covers a period from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010.
Most of Foyle's pre-season signings came towards the end of the previous campaign, with the signings of Michael Gash for £55,000 and Djoumin Sangare on a free transfer being the only arrivals during the 2009–10 pre-season transfer window. The league season saw a new record for consecutive wins set, with eight victories from 14 November 2009 to 23 January 2010, as the team finished fifth in the league and so qualified for the Conference National play-offs. After beating Luton Town 2–0 on aggregate, York were defeated 3–1 by Oxford United in the Final, resulting in a seventh consecutive season of Conference football.
York reached the fourth round of the FA Trophy, being beaten 2–1 by eventual champions Barrow. An FA Cup run saw the team beat League Two team Crewe Alexandra 3–2 and play Premier League team Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium, with York taking the lead in the game but eventually losing 3–1. Richard Brodie was the club's top goalscorer for a second season running after scoring 34 goals, with 26 in the league, four in the FA Cup, three in the FA Trophy and one in the play-offs. Michael Ingham was voted Clubman of the Year.

York won the second leg 1–0 through a Carruthers goal, meaning the tie was won 2–0 on aggregate.[116] Following the match, Brodie and Carruthers were hit by coins with the squad being forced to leave the ground through the back of a stand after having missiles thrown at them by a section of Luton fans.[117] Russell left to join Cambridge permanently after making no appearances for York during the season.[118] The team lost the play-off Final 3–1 to Oxford at Wembley, with York's goal coming from a Ryan Clarke own goal.[119] After the end of the season, the club announced Clarke, Gall, Mimms, Nelthorpe, O'Hare and Pacquette were to be released when their contracts expired on 30 June, while Miotto, Smith and Sangare were in negotiations over new contracts, Graham, Mackin and Purkiss were offered new contracts and youth team players Jamie Hopcutt and Lisles were offered professional contracts.[120] Purkiss rejected the offer of a new contract a day later, and although Foyle said "The door is still open and I might try to help him in another way",[121] he eventually signed for Oxford.[122] Smith rejected talks with the club and instead agreed to sign for Mansfield on 1 July.[123]
York's first summer signings were made after defenders Duane Courtney and Greg Young joined from Kidderminster and Altrincham respectively, while Mackin signed a new contract.[124] Sangare signed a new short-term six-month contract, which would keep him at the club until 25 December.[125] Graham turned down a new two-year contract and agreed to sign for Kettering on 1 July.[126] At the Football Conference's Annual Presentation Dinner, Brodie was named the division's Player of the Year, the joint Top Goalscorer and a member of the Team of the Year.[127] Blackburn Rovers winger Andy Haworth arrived on trial, with a view to signing on a season-long loan.[128] Winger Peter Till became York's third summer signing after joining from Walsall on a one-year contract.[129]
